New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint a Research Assistant reporting to the Assistant Professor of Psychology.


The Research Data Scientist will work in the Teaching, Learning and Development Lab and support the management and analysis of data over multiple interdisciplinary projects related to the Lab’s research focus. The Research Data Scientist will provide the team with Data Analytics, Data visualization, Data Management, coding & development and support on the use of specific analytical software for equipment used in the lab.


The Teaching, Learning and Development Lab in the Division of Science (Psychology Program) at New York University Abu Dhabi explores the role social contexts play in children’s development. The lab utilizes a cross-cultural approach to better understand children’s experiences in the home and in classrooms. By studying both similarities and differences within and across diverse socio-cultural contexts, we aim to reduce cultural bias in our understanding of how children develop, extending findings from WEIRD (minority world) contexts to include findings from diverse (majority world) contexts.


With our research, we aim to address the following questions:

  • What are similarities and differences in parent-child interactions across diverse socio-cultural communities?
  • What are cross-national similarities and differences in early childhood education (ECE) practices and outcomes?
  • What do these similarities and differences tell us about the most effective ways to support the early development of school readiness skills, within and across countries? 

Key Responsibilities:


  • Working with faculty and researchers to advance their research work by providing Data analytics and research analysis support
  • Assist researchers with Data management including big data, data mining and database support and development
  • Support and advise researchers on Data visualization
  • Continually review data analysis tools and frameworks and recommend improvements to keep pace with continually evolving needs of the lab
  • Support researchers with coding and algorithm development


Required Education:

  • Sc. degree or higher in relevant discipline (Statistics, Psychology, Education, Human Development, etc. Candidates from fields outside of the Social Sciences will be considered if relevant experience is demonstrated)


Preferred Education:

  • Sc. degree or higher + 3 years’ experience (or educational equivalent) in relevant discipline (Statistics, Psychology, Education, Human Development, etc. Candidates from fields outside of the Social Sciences will be considered if relevant experience is demonstrated)


Required Experience:

  • Experience in understanding researcher requirements and translating those requirements into functional and dependable solutions
  • Experience working with data science programming languages like R, Mplus
  • Experience data management and big data
  • Experience in data visualization
  • Professional experience working on complex projects in research environments
  • Knowledge of scientific analysis, statistical methods and statistical analysis
  • Knowledge of visualizing research data and familiarity with data visualization tools e.g. Tableau etc.
  • Knowledge of data managing including data collection, organization and cleaning
  • Knowledge of standard statistical packages such as Excel, R, STATA etc.
  • Ability to develop applications using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to non-technical audience.
  • Ability to keep up to date with technological advances
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment and contribute positively to it
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Ability to work with individuals at all levels and diplomatically manages their expectations
  • Creative problem-solving abilities and initiatives
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong presentation and report writing skills
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills are essential
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities in an effective and professional manner



Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in project management of application development projects
  • Experience in a higher education research institution, especially developing and/or supporting research
  • Experience in analyzing observational data (for example, using MangoldINTERACT) and/or physiological data (for example, heart rate data)
