New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint an Associate Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement (AVCIA).

The Associate Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement (AVCIA) serves as the Vice Chancellor’s lead partner in diversifying NYU Abu Dhabi’s resources. This is achieved through comprehensive local and international programing, combined with initiatives to position the University as an anchor institution of the UAE whose programs deserve philanthropic support as well as participation in its revenue-earning programs. 

The AVCIA is responsible for oversight, planning and implementation of NYUAD philanthropic program that secures significant financial resources from high net-worth individuals, foundations, corporations, and industry partners to support NYUAD’s ongoing priorities and new initiatives. Strategize and lead the engagement and development of the University’s growing alumni cohort. Advance the institution as broadly and on as many fronts as possible through the thoughtful partnerships with NYUAD’s leadership team, including the Provost, Chief Administration and Business Officer, Senior Vice Provost for Strategy and Planning, Associate Vice Chancellor for External Relations, and others.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead all major gifts functions, which includes principal cash gifts, planned giving, donor prospecting and research, and any special events or campaigns. Report development opportunities to the Vice Chancellor and to the UDAR Senior Vice President. In support of philanthropic goals, conduct discovery, qualification, cultivation and solicitation meetings with prospects. Develop proposals and gift agreements that inspire philanthropic investment
  • Collaborate with the university’s government partners as well as members of the University’s leadership team, faculty, staff, and student body to establish advancement and philanthropic goals.  Contribute strategically to the leadership team to ensure department development goals are achieved as set forth. Motivate and coordinate the efforts of the team within the local UAE community and across departments of NYUAD. Collaborate with NYU’s Department of University Development and Alumni Relations to enhance NYUAD’s philanthropic capabilities in relevant areas such as research, donor prospecting and the coordination of joint activities in the UAE, MENA region, and NYU’s study sites in New York and around the world
  • Develop and administer Institutional Advancement budget. Lead and manage administrative, professional and volunteer staff and department, including training, mentoring, and professional development. Develop results-oriented accountability matrix for resource diversification at NYUAD, cognizant of the special conditions of NYUAD and the local philanthropic environment. Establish clear directions and set “stretch” goals, objectives and benchmarks for the department. Exert broad financial responsibility for setting and meeting philanthropic objectives, evaluating and reporting on results, and developing corrective strategies as needed
  • Develop and maintain strong connections and collaborations with the Department of External Relations, the Vice Provost for Cultural and Research Outreach, and NYUAD’s Abu Dhabi Government partners to support institutional narrative development, publications strategy, and engaging and appropriate university events that are attractive and relevant to university patrons and alumni
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the Provost Office on grants capture, and with other leadership team members on prospects for event space utilization and executive education. Forge and leverage constructive and effective relationships within the DARO team and among NYUAD colleagues across the institution

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the liberal arts, sciences, marketing, or communications

Preferred Education:

  • MPA or MBA

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of seven (7)  years experience in philanthropy and/or university administration with a significant role in institutional positioning and donor relations
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in major-gift giving and solicitation and philanthropic campaigns
  • Proven success in building and maintaining relationships with individual donors, alumni, foundations, corporations, and government-related stakeholders. Proven success in asking for and closing gifts
  • Familiarity with the opportunities and challenges of resource diversification and philanthropy in the local environment
  • Extensive management experience, including the ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage the performance of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth. Ability to position NYUAD principals to make major asks
  • Ability to work with events teams to plan and execute engaging and successful institutional events
  • Ability to design, implement and direct multiple projects, set deadlines and ensure program accountability
  • Ability to think strategically across NYUAD’s units to create competitive and breakthrough strategies and plans for local and organization-wide efforts
  • Ability to communicate a compelling and inspired vision and sense of core purpose, and tell the story of NYUAD in ways appropriate to different stakeholders. Ability to inspire, motivate and marshal resources throughout NYUAD
  • Ability to cultivate the creative ideas of others, make connections between ideas and people, and project potential outcomes.Ability to make strategic decisions based on analysis, wisdom, experience and judgment
  • Ability to act independently and consult when needed.Maintain confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information
  • High emotional intelligence, with the ability to persuade others in- and externally, and rally them to institutional and Program goals and objectives.Superb communications and presentation skills, including ability to convey NYUAD’s mission effectively to diverse groups, including major donors, corporate and foundation executives, board members, government partners, and others critical to NYUAD’s mission and prosperity
  • Ability to communicate effectively with influential people. Able to change tactics midstream to respond to the situation and opportunities at hand without deviating from NYUAD programs and goals
  • Ability to diffuse high-tension situations comfortably and maintain composure under pressure
  • Working and effective understanding of the basics of charitable gift planning
  • Knowledge of and experience with international cultural contex

Preferred Experience:

  • Broad understanding of university resource diversification along vectors of philanthropy, sponsored research, grants and contracts, event space utilization, and executive program
  • Knowledge of advanced gift planning concepts
  • Business planning experience
  • Knowledge of the mission and range of educational and research programs of NYUAD
  • Ability to commit the organization’s actions and resources in a way that affects public and local image positively
  • Knowledge of and experience with the most pressing issues and innovative research solutions of our time, for which special support could be solicited
