  • Position Summary

    New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint a HPC Application Specialist, reporting to the Director, High Performance Computing & Research Computing Support.

    The HPC Application Specialist will work as part of a team to provide researchers and faculty with user support, training, day-to-day assistance for the installation and configuration of HPC and data intensive applications and occasionally collaborate with researchers where the candidate’s expertise can contribute to a project’s success.


    Key Responsibilities

    • Day-to-day user support including Installing, Compiling and debugging research applications and provide documentation
    • Respond and address all user requests, questions and queries received via the ticketing system, email, phone or face-to-face
    • Provide user training, develop and maintain training material, how-tos and tutorials for the users. Manage the wiki and website
    • Monitor HPC resource utilization and generate utilization reports
    • Proactively insure that users are kept up to date on the system status and any downtime that would impact the users
    • Contribute to research projects with HPC technical expertise
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of software and HPC resource capabilities including continuing study and attending seminars and conferences


    Required Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years experience OR a Masters degree with a minimum of 3 years experience (or educational equivalent) in Computational Science or Engineering
    • Relevant training in parallel programing and parallel libraries (e.g. MPI, OpenMP)

    Preferred Education:

    • Relevant certification/training IT service management (e.g. ITIL)
    • Relevant certification/training in Linux SysAdmin (e.g. RHCSA or RHCE)
    • Relevant certification/training in HPC schedulers and workload managers (e.g. Slurm)

    Required Experience:

    • Experience in installing and managing applications and tools in HPC environments
    • Experience supporting HPC users in higher education or research institutions
    • Experience with standard scientific and statistical packages (e.g. MATLAB, STATA etc.)
    • Experience with installation of large parallel scientific applications (e.g. Amber, ROMS, HiRAM etc.)
    • Experience with HPC resource managers and schedulers (e.g. Slurm, Moab etc.)
    • Strong programming skills in the following languages C, C++, FORTRAN
    • Programming skills using scripting languages like Unix shell, Python, php or Perl
    • Programming skills using parallel libraries (e.g. MPI, OpenMP)
    • Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Strong presentation and report writing skills
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills 
    • Must be able to manage conflicting priorities in an effective and professional manner

    Preferred Experience:

    • Experience with data mining, machine learning, and AI tools (e.g. PyTorch etc.)
    • Experience with HPC operational support operations and ticketing system (e.g. Service Now)
    • Knowledge of scientific analysis, statistical methods and computer related research design and statistical analysis
    • Management of large data sets
    • Knowledge of machine learning methods and tools
    • Knowledge of Linux system administration
