New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint an Assistant Vice Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Programs reporting to the Vice Provost for Graduate and Postdoctoral Program.


The Assistant Vice Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Programs (AVP) will serve as the chief of staff to the Vice Provost for Graduate and Postdoctoral Programs and will have primary oversight of the administration of graduate education and support of postdoctoral associates at NYU Abu Dhabi.  The candidate will coordinate and supervise directors of graduate recruitment, graduate admissions, graduate academics, graduate and postdoctoral experience, and the unit’s business officer. Working with senior staff members in areas across the campus, the AVP will ensure the development of a strong administrative infrastructure that will support all aspects of the recruitment, admissions, and matriculation of master’s and doctoral students, including the design and implementation of graduate-student financial aid processes, the development and implementation of policies pertinent to graduate education, the processing of graduate theses and dissertations, graduate committees, monitoring student progress, degree audit, career and professional development for graduate students and postdocs, graduate and postdoctoral housing, and commencement. The AVP will also oversee the technological infrastructure that supports graduate education, including the procurement, development, and deployment of admissions and student-information systems. They will provide input to faculty on the development of proposals for graduate education and work with the Vice Provost on the process of proposal evaluation, approval, and accreditation.


The position has responsibility for day-to-day management of the whole program and project functions and acts independently, shows initiative and achieves results in a timely manner.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and administer graduate financial aid policies and processes for master’s and doctoral programs housed at NYUAD
  • Work with faculty leading academic programs on the allocation of financial aid during student recruitment
  • Oversee the administration of all graduate student financial matters, including fellowship, employment, allowances, and health insurance
  • Work with the Budget Office to ensure accuracy and legal compliance, and on audit processes as necessary.
  • Responsible for the operational budget of the unit
  • Supervise business officer in budgetary matters
  • Liaise with NYU Bursar, Office of Financial Aid, and other offices in NY, on tuition remission, health insurance waivers, housing stipends of Global PhD Fellows
  • Draft and revise cross-campus agreements
  • Consults with faculty and deans on graduate-student petitions and conflict resolution.
  • Interacts with graduate affairs offices at other branches of NYU and serves as needed on university-wide committees
  • Works with NYU counterparts, department chairs, and faculty to provide smooth administration of the Global PhD Fellows Program
  • Develops programs to support postdoctoral associates, and works with the Vice Provost of Faculty Development on resources to develop faculty mentorship and improve graduate student advising
  • Report to and support the Vice Provost.
  • Analyze proposals for new graduate programs and provide support to faculty in their design and implementation
  • Supervise the Director of Graduate Academic Services in creating and implementing academic policies and procedures that support the efficient running of graduate programs
  • Consult on student cases, interfacing with deans, program heads, faculty, and staff as necessary
  • Work with student-information systems to facilitate the tracking of student progress and research outcomes, and degree audit
  • Ensure annual reviews of students are efficient and effectively communicated
  • Supervise the Associate Director of Graduate Recruitment and the Assistant Director of Graduate Admissions Procedures
  • Communicate with faculty on recruitment and admissions strategies
  • Consult on marketing and outreach
  • Update NYUAD website content
  • Working with direct reports, have primary responsibility for programs that support the recruitment and successful onboarding of new students, such as Graduate Candidate Weekend and Graduate Orientation
  • Supervise the Associate Director of Graduate and Postdoctoral Support, scope, implement and evaluate projects and activities to support graduate and postdoctoral professional development, writing support, and career transitions
  • Work with leadership across campus to implement student-centered programs that facilitate success
  • Evaluate the systems infrastructure that supports graduate education at NYUAD
  • Liaise with systems analysts and engineers to implement effective student information systems that support the student admissions, recruitment, and matriculation within the broader framework of NYUAD technological infrastructure
  • Implement policies that ensure a cybersecure technological environment
  • Oversee the analysis and reporting of academic and financial data


Required Education:

  • Master’s degree


Preferred Education:

  • Doctoral degree or terminal degree in field


Required Experience:

  • A minimum of 7 years working in similar faculty and student-facing coordinating roles in an academic setting with demonstrated initiative and success
  • Ability to lead meetings and effectively represent the program office
  • Experience with the use and deployment of student-information systems
  • Superior written and oral communication skills in English
  • Capacity to work across multiple projects concurrently with a high-level of service orientation and with high-level executive stakeholders
  • Professional and resourceful, using initiative and discretion in all activities – including ability to work within a team environment and deal with people from different backgrounds and nationalities


Preferred Experience:  

  • An understanding of programs within an academic organization
  • Experience with graduate education, student services, and financial aid; and supervisory experience. Admissions and enrolment expertise and system capabilities, writing and maintaining website content
  • Large scale one time and serial programming skills
  • Arabic language proficiency (written and spoken)
