New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint a Theater Technical Specialist reporting directly to the Video and Broadcast Manager.

 

The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi is looking for knowledgeable and experienced Theater Technical Specialist to primarily support the Video and Broadcast requirements, the Theater Technical Specialist will operate and maintain all professional stage, lighting, sound and video systems across multiple venues, including a 700-seat auditorium, a 150-seat recital hall, a flexible 300-capacity black box theater, and external spaces that will be used for performance, dinners, film, conferences, and other events, and various studios. In addition, they will collaborate with and mentor NYUAD students developing and presenting work in the Arts Center.

 

The position will require someone with a good understanding of video systems plus a willingness to be hands on with stage, lighting, sound equipment. The Theater Technical Specialist will report to the Video and Broadcast Manager, however may be working under the Stage, Sound, Lighting and Video Managers as required, and contribute to the development of a first-rate production crew. As such, the candidate must combine expert technical knowledge with communication, motivational, and training skills.

 

The successful candidate will be trained to operate all technical aspects of the performance space.

 

The position will require someone with hands on knowledge of video equipment and systems, who is resourceful, adept at problem solving, and able to collaborate with Production and Programming staff in delivering technical support for all Arts Center productions. Working as a skilled technician in all aspects of technical theater to achieve the successful production results for a variety of events including dance, theater, and music productions. Primarily, with responsibility to video, howev­er will work and support all technical departments.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate video and broadcast equipment when required, such as content playback, remote camera control, projectors, video walls, live streaming and archive devices
  • Operate lighting, sound, and stage equipment, as and when required
  • To rig, de-rig, focus, program and maintain video equipment
  • To assist setting up stage, lighting, and sound equipment as required for productions, performances and events as required
  • Undertake video editing
  • To act, when required, as a Duty Technician and Arts Center representative in supervising external staff using the venues by visiting companies, rental clients, third party vendors, and ensure all NYUAD Health and Safety policies are adhered to
  • To adhere to all Health and Safety procedures in order to minimize the risk of injury and accidents
  • To ensure all technical areas and working environments are kept tidy and orderly, ensuring they comply with current licensing, fire and health and safety requirements
  • Maintain and safeguard the video equipment of the Arts Center, as well as other technical assets, by implementing regular and annual preventative maintenance strategies. Perform or arrange for maintenance and repair of equipment as needed
  • Apply equal standards of professionalism and excellence to all productions in The Arts Center, from student productions to world-class international productions
  • Be available for technical assistance in case of emergencies as necessary
  • Attend all production meetings as needed
  • To adhere to all Health and Safety procedures in order to minimize the risk of injury and accidents
  • Other duties as assigned, willing to work weekends and evenings as required

 

Qualifications

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of 3+ years’ experience with large scale technical systems, operations and maintenance, preferably within a range of disciplines: dance, theatre, and music
  • Experience in maintenance, basic repair, and troubleshooting of technical equipment
  • Ability to read, draw, and interpret site diagrams, location maps, plots etc.
  • Capable of working at elevated heights, 90’ and over. Able to lift over 50 pounds
  • Experience working within a university context and mentoring experience is desirable
  • Excellent communication skills between all areas of production, programming partners, and artists
  • Excellent record-keeping, organizational, and multi-tasking skills
  • Fluent spoken English is required, additional spoken languages are desirable
